Tell us about yourself:

I am a grassroots community organizer-turned audio storyteller. I’m dedicated to telling stories about changing landscapes, living archives, and overlooked testimonies.

I am a freelance audio storyteller DJ, and emerging sound artist based in Oakland, California with roots in Palestine, Syria, and Jordan. Before making the switch to audio, I spent over a decade in grassroots community organizing in Seattle, Washington, which led to my curiosity for oral histories and audio production. I am a recent alum of KALW Radio’s Audio Academy fellowship. In my free time, I host a weekly online music show, Kan Ya Makan, on BFF.fm. In my day job, I am a grant writer at a local nonprofit.

My past sound artwork can be found at the Arab American National Museum, and my upcoming project will be featured digitally by Arab.amp, and by multimedia installation at the Temescal Art Center in Oakland.

A piece of yours or project (in any medium) that you'd like to share.

This story about a Palestinian family in the Bay Area who survived the Nakba of 1948, and their continuous fight to return home.

What draws you to storytelling?

It’s easy to forget that lived experiences inform the fabric of where we come from and what we believe. For me, storytelling carves a space to center the humanity of overlooked and misinterpreted testimonies. I came to audio storytelling through being politicized in the U.S. as a Palestinian, and realizing early on that we have to humanize our own stories.

What excites you the most about being a New Voices Scholar?

I’m grateful to be learning alongside powerful emerging voices in audio. I’ll always be a huge fan of my peers.

What’s playing on your radio/audio streaming service right now?

Right now, I’m listening to online music shows based in and around Palestine. Radio Al Hara and NTS Radio have both been broadcasting stories and songs from Gaza and Palestine. Locally, I’m tuning into the special programming that online stations like Lower Grand Radio and Hyde FM are playing.
