Conversation: Can a Local News Podcast Be Financially Sustainable?
On Aug 6, 2020 AIR hosted a conversation about sustaining local news and building a member-supported local news podcast with Santa Cruz Local Co-Founder Kara Meyberg Guzman and LION Publishers Programming Director Anika Anand.
We also shared information about the Google News Initiative Startups Lab Boot Camp, a free, fully remote eight-week program that LION launched in partnership with GNI to help people create local news businesses.
Since joining LION in 2019 as the programming director, Anika Anand has created multiple programs to support existing and aspiring independent news publishers. She co-founded The Evergrey, a daily Seattle newsletter, in 2016 and has worked in product and community engagement roles at legacy and local media publications.
Kara Meyberg Guzman is CEO and co-founder of Santa Cruz Local, a podcast and newsletter about public policy in Santa Cruz, California. Before launching Santa Cruz Local, Meyberg Guzman was managing editor of the Santa Cruz Sentinel, the first woman and the first person of color in the position.
