Shia Levitt

Shia Levitt is Director and creator of News Ambassadors, a collaborative journalism project enlisting college journalism students to help local newsrooms fill gaps in coverage of underreported communities.  News Ambassadors links students to counterparts in demographically/politically dissimilar locations to collaborate on stories that uplift solutions and common ground. We have worked or are working with partner journalism schools and/or public radio stations in Missouri, Georgia, Texas, New York, California, Illinois, Nevada, Arizona, New Jersey and Connecticut.

 

Aside from starting News Ambassadors, Levitt was a freelance reporter and producer whose work has been heard on NPR, Marketplace and many public radio affiliates. In addition to radio, she is a freelance photographer for various magazines, and occasionally produces for television. In addition to domestic reporting, she has reported internationally from Japan, Philippines, Ivory Coast, Kenya, India and Israel/Palestine. She spent several years in Brooklyn, NY, where she taught Audio Storytelling and Radio Reporting to amazingly talented upper division broadcast journalism students at Brooklyn College.

In 2017, she moved to the Bay Area, where she reported for KQED and later worked as a News Editor at KALW and mentor for their 2022 class of Audio Academy Fellows. She conceived and produced the Bay Poets poetry segment on KALW. Shia has taught radio reporting to students at Mills College, CUNY Brooklyn College and Queens College, as well as to WNYC's Radio Rookies and to UNICEF Radio trainees in Haiti. She just returned to Brooklyn in 2022.
