About Katie
I'm Katie Clark Gray (she/her), an NYC-based writer-producer and story editor, and one-half of the creative development firm Uncompromised Creative. I'm on the lookout for freelance audio work in scripting, story editing, interviewing, researching, and early-stage creative development-- including getting that newsletter off the ground.
Currently, I'm currently a writer/producer on the Wondery show The Best Idea Yet, and a contributor to the excellent Good Tape magazine. I'm also a writer/producer on the short film Everyone Loves Candy.
Previously, I was a senior writer for the podcast Masters of Scale with Reid Hoffman, I won multiple Webby and Signal Awards for audio storytelling (including wins for episodes with Barack Obama, JJ Abrams, Stacey Abrams, and Tyra Banks, and nods for episodes with Daymond John, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and others). I've also been a contributing writer and editor to the Spark and Fire podcast, Meditative Story, and Should This Exist?; a guest writer/performer for the fiction noir podcast Fathom; and senior producer for The Come Up with Cassie Freeman (Aunt Viv, Bel Air).
My pre-audio life was as a playwright and filmmaker. Writing credits include The Paper Store with Penn Badgley, the cyber-thriller User 927 (winner, Next Generation New Play Contest), and the adaptation of the acclaimed memoir Now Everyone Will Know. I earned a Pew Fellowship in Playwriting, was an inaugural member of Interact Theatre’s Core Writers, whose other notable alums include James Ijames (Fat Ham on B’way), and the LAByrinth Theatre Co.’s Intensive Ensemble. Invitee, Lark Theatre Co.’s Playwrights’ Week (RIP).
For years, I worked with incarcerated persons as an instructor and artist-in-residence for restorative justice programs; anyone looking to collaborate on projects dealing with the carceral system should hit me up.
I live in Astoria with my creative partner Nicholas Gray, a teen kid actor & filmmaker, and one extremely extra rescue dog.

Before his rise to fame, David Duchovny is a popular kid – charming, funny, bright, and athletic, beloved by friends and teachers alike. But there’s one teacher who puts David off-balance, calling him out for foolishness where others see charm. Years after graduation, struggling to make it as an actor in Hollywood, David finally comes to recognize that what he mistook for dislike was in fact an encouragement to go his own way, in his own time.

One of the biggest strikes against the tech industry is too much noise and not enough signal. But does it always pay to "show, not tell," — even about the most innovative of products? Austin Russell of Luminar Technologies believes so. At just 17 years old, Austin created revolutionary tech that would unlock autonomous driving in the future, and make safer passenger cars today. Almost as startling is how he kept his breakthrough close to his chest for five years — carefully choosing trusted team members, mentors, and industry partners before revealing his tech to the wider world. In this special episode guest-hosted by master hype-ologist will.i.am, Austin sheds light on his quiet approach to scaling, and the importance of letting the technology speak for itself.

But the Super Mario Bros. origin story will surprise you like a rogue turtle shell: It features Donkey Kong, Popeye, and an artist from a forest in Kyoto. Find out how an angry landlord changed the course of video game history, and how Nintendo perfected a strategy called “The Infinite Game” to keep creating hit after world-dominating hit. Jump down that green pipe, and listen to find out why Super Mario Bros is the best idea yet.

What do politics and entrepreneurship have in common? Both require the courage to seize once-in-a-lifetime windows of opportunity. Few have better demonstrated that ability than President Barack Obama-- who sits down with Reid Hoffman in Part 1 of this two-part episode on finding the right moment to act, and when the moment chooses you.

Once upon a time, American kids had a problem—OK, two. They were watching way, WAY too much TV and they were falling way, way behind in school. But then a trailblazing producer and her psychologist friend asked a bold question: What if we used the first problem to solve the second? The result: Sesame Street, home of Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Bert & Ernie, and a social-media superstar named Elmo. Since Sesame Street’s debut in 1969—the same year as the moon landing!—the show’s helped educate more than 150 million kids in 70 different languages while breaking racial barriers along the way. It’s also taught us the meaning of friendship, the value of neighbors, and the joy of a good rubber ducky. And it was only possible thanks to audacious creators, educators, and one shaggy-looking puppeteer named James Maury Henson (but you can call him Jim). Learn about Kermit The Frog’s commercial past, why the only bets worth making are contrarian ones, and why Sesame Street is the best idea yet.

Breathe Deep: How I lost my passion and found my purpose. In honor of Mental Health Awareness month, we’ve revamped one of the most personal episodes we’ve ever worked on. To create it, Dallas worked with the team from Meditative Story to tell a story from his former life as a musician. It’s about losing the thing that had defined his life for more than a decade, and finding something entirely different in the process. This remix concludes with an all-new segment where Dallas reflects on what it was like to finally share this story.
