Tacoma was once home to the West Coast's largest Japantown. But when FDR ordered the city's Japanese residents to be forcibly removed in WWII, the enclave never fully recovered. Writer and public historian Tamiko Nimura is part of a movement to memorialize the history of Tacoma's Japantown, which for years has been hidden in plain sight.
Produced for the Transom Traveling Workshop in Seattle at KUOW, January 2020.
The Alaska Myth is a documentary podcast about the myths that shape how Alaskans view our history and ourselves. The podcast explores how settler myths shape popular ideas about Alaska's history and identity, and the consequences of those myths.
The first episode of The Alaska Myth examines how Alaskan state identity has been built off of the myth of "the Last Frontier." We discuss the relationship between Alaskan identity and the frontier myth, John Muir, and what frontier violence looked like in Alaska. And we talk to an expert on settler fantasies.
