About J.C.
J.C. Howard is a proud Oaklander, currently based in the Washington, D.C. area. He has described himself as a ‘podcast host in search of a show.’ He is a Producer for NPR, producing How I Built This with Guy Raz, and an occasional panelist on Pop Culture Happy Hour. Other on-air appearances include NPR’s Code Switch, Slate’s ICYMI and Leaving The Theater.
Previous projects include: producing for TED Radio Hour, writing for NPR’s Car Talk, and producing for 91.7FM KALW—creating radio edits of the KALW project/Radiotopia podcast 99% Invisible. J.C. also formerly worked as a General Assignment Reporter for KALW's Crosscurrents Program. And—in case it ever comes up—he loves breakfast.
As a graduate of the First Voice Apprenticeship Program (2016), J.C. was a host and producer for the cultural affairs Radio-magazine Full Circle on 94.1FM KPFA in Berkeley, California. In 2012 J.C. began hosting and producing a News & Current Events Podcast called the Cut Down Podcast.
J.C. holds a Master of the Arts in Communication and Leadership from Gonzaga University. A pursuit he began in 2009 before failing miserably shortly after (it’s a whole story), and finally completing the degree in 2017.

How do you participate in a faith practice that hasn't had the best track record with racism? That's what J.C. Howard gets into in this episode of Code Switch.
J.C. grew up Pentecostal, but going from a Black Pentecostal church to a white evangelical one isn't just a shift in worship style. He says that being the young Black man surrounded by white evangelicals made him "realize that this place might invite me in, but it wasn't built for me."
As J.C. was thinking through his own spiritual journey, he read the story of another Black Christian, Dante Stewart, who started and ended in a very similar place. On this episode, J.C. talks to Dante as a way to explore his own story.
