Hussain Khan

Professional History

I'm an audio producer and long form writer with an emphasis on sound and narrative finishing my Masters of Journalism in audio at UC Berkeley.

I've produced my own podcasts from the ground up that have won grants and support like Telus StoryHive and HotDocs 2020 Podcast Lab. I've also pivoted shows and worked on coaching teams, including beginners to audio, such as for the Goldman School of Public Policy. I've covered the gamut of production: pitching and show conceptualization, audience identification, pre-interviewing and booking guests, developing story-oriented questions, recording in person and at distance, capturing rich ambient sound, and working with editors to produce the final stories; while I'm not a sound engineer, I have done basic editing and sound design in Audition and Pro Tools and collaborated with engineers before.

In addition to narrative podcasting, I've worked on radio reporting, spots, and features for North Gate radio, a collaboration between Berkeley Journalism and our college radio, KALX. I'm also working as a summer fellow at KALW, an NPR member station based in San Francisco. I've produced and written 5+ minute features, 1 minute news spots, line produced shows, and conducted vox pop interviews across the Bay.

Personal

I was born and have my earliest memories among the crowded streets of Pakistan, and then spent my childhood and university years in the praries and west coast of Canada. These days I proudly call Oakland, California, my home. When I'm not coming up with a story in any given medium, I'm climbing rocks, reading comics, playing board games, hiking, and obsessing over pop culture.
