About free

free feral (they/them) plays with sound, song, and story to curate multidimensional experiences. Born in the SF Bay Area, they made their home in New Orleans and Mississippi from 2012 thru 2024 and are currently based in Oaxaca, MX. free centers collaborations with other Black and queer artists and has composed scores for film, theatre, and dance using strings, loops, and vocals. A poet and documenteur, their ongoing project, We Are the Promised Land (WATPL), is a multimedia altar to Black land legacies in North Mississippi. free holds a BM from Oberlin Conservatory, a Certificate in Documentary Studies from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke, and an MA in Southern Studies from the University of Mississippi.

We Are the Promised Land

We Are the Promised Land (WATPL) is an multimedia altar to Black land legacies in the Mississippi Hill Country that centers Annette Hollowell and her family at Foxfire Ranch. With elements of poetry, photography, video, and audio documentary, we place a kaleidoscopic lens on inheritance in order to  investigate the totality of what we receive from our ancestors. As we get to know Annette’s family, we explore the possibility of offering our ancestors some form of healing. What if we are the afterlife? How do create the after life our ancestors deserve?
