About Fred
Fred@BreathingRoomRadio.com - I'm a journalist who writes about the arts, culture, and entertainment for radio, print, and the web.
Radio - in its many forms - has been a lifelong fascination for me, and my first love.
My most recent audio piece on NPR was an obituary of film director Norman Jewison: https://www.npr.org/2024/01/22/1226163835/director-norman-jewison-known-for-moonstruck-and-fiddler-on-the-roof-dies-at-97
I'm thrilled to be reporting and writing on arts and culture topics for the Indy Week, a print and online newspaper (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC). Indy Week pieces (Archive): https://indyweek.com/author/fred-wasser/
I'm the host of Breathing Room® - a weekly one hour radio program of jazz, standards, and conversation at community station WHUP-FM in Hillsborough, North Carolina. https://whupfm.org/show/breathing-room/
Three days a week I work at a small grocery co-op, Chatham Marketplace, in Pittsboro, NC. This work enhances my perspective on our community and the world. And - the work is fun. I'm meeting amazing people. I've also worked as a waiter, busboy, pet sitter, packing clerk at a bakery, an enumerator for the U.S. Census Bureau, and an audio technician at a TV station.
Over the years, I’ve worked full-time on the production staff of several national radio programs: NPR’s "Morning Edition," "Weekend Edition/Sunday," "Weekend All Things Considered," and Minnesota Public Radio's "A Prairie Home Companion."
