About Fred

I create arts, culture, and entertainment journalism for radio, print, and the web.

Radio - in its many forms - has been a lifelong fascination for me, and my first love. But I also thoroughly enjoy reporting and writing on arts and culture topics for the Indy Week, a print and online newspaper (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC).

I'm the host of Breathing Room® - a weekly one hour radio program of jazz, standards, and conversation at community station WHUP-FM in Hillsborough, North Carolina.

Three days a week I work at a small grocery co-op, Chatham Marketplace, in Pittsboro, NC. This work doesn't compromise my journalism in the least. In fact, it enhances my perspective on our community and the world. And - the work is fun. I embrace it. If you visit the store, say hello to me.

Over the years, I’ve worked full-time on the production staff of several national radio programs: NPR’s "Morning Edition," "Weekend Edition/Sunday,"  "Weekend All Things Considered," and Minnesota Public Radio's "A Prairie Home Companion."

Career Summary Tweet: Radio-obsessed since a little boy. Shepherd & Willy B. were my heroes. Love listening, researching, interviewing, writing, editing, mixing.
