About Breakmaster
Writer of theme songs, scores, soundtracks, video game music, live installations, sound design, ads, remixes, audio adventures, personal projects, beats, albums. I like all of it, maybe conceptual pieces are the most fun. Which sort of just means I like obstructions.
Avid user of what's nearby and preferably free and beyond a DAW I don't really buy equipment. Music doesn't usually sound best to me with 100%-clean recording and production. I like texture. Which sort of just means I record samples with my phone.
Music work lies anywhere along sliding scales of difficulty and strangeness; I'm happy about all of it because I get to write music. Every genre has good attributes and it's fun watching styles overlap and mutate over time. I'm obsessed and feel best going round and round in musical loops. Which sort of just means autism.
Changelog / Vox / Verge / CBC / Wondry / Smithsonian / Radiotopia / Vulture / The Times / LinkedIn / Politico / Gimlet / Atlantic / WNYC / The Economist / Sandwich / BigThink / Song Exploder / Switched on Pop / independent shows
All told, about 200 theme songs written plus a licensable scoring library with an additional 900 songs.
Breakmaster's Portfolio
An 11-album series of themes and scores I've written over the last decade plus.
Took a 13-minute car chase from Mad Max: Fury Road because it's a beautiful movie to look at and I erased all the audio. Then wrote new audio piece by piece: music, sound effects, dialogue, anything pretty/funny/epic to represent action on screen.
Car crashes and explosions and lightning strikes form naturally-chaotic music. Nux's driving mix is heavy on Gary Numan. Furiosa listens to Paula Cole. The war boys all speak bird. Flares explode into piano key plinks. My dog was the voice of Max (RIP to a real one). Immortan Joe always has his blinkers on.
Even funded on Kickstarter, somehow.
