About Brandon
Brandon Gates is a journalist, audio producer, screenwriter, director, and actor based in Brooklyn, NY.
He is the creator, co-writer, director, and voice of 'Winston' in the fictional podcast Today We Almost Died, a dark comedy about four Brooklyn roommates navigating the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. Although the pilot premiered in June 2025 to critical acclaim, the script previously won multiple honors, including ‘Best Comedy Screenplay’ at the Prague International Awards and the London Movie Awards before its debut.
Brandon has freelanced for Thrillist and NPR, covering diverse stories including the longest-standing Black opera company in America, a YA fiction novel popularized by 'BookTok,' and a choreographer addressing gun violence through ballet.
A 2024 AIR New Voices Fellow, he holds degrees from the University of South Carolina and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and is an adjunct professor of journalism at Hunter College.
In addition to journalism, Brandon is a filmmaker and studied sketch comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade. His comedic short "Podcast Bros" received acclaim at multiple film festivals, including Best Sketch Comedy and Best Actor in a Sketch Comedy at the New York City Short Comedy Film Festival.
He has also voiced characters for the rom-com podcast "Meet Cute."
Outside of his professional and creative endeavors, Brandon enjoys cycling, powerlifting, comic books, and international travel.
