AIR Launches Fellowship to Champion Public Radio Talent

[New York, NY] – [June 18, 2025] – AIR (Association of Independents in Radio) announced the launch of its New Voices Public Radio Fellowship, an innovative eight-week program designed to empower and advance mid-career public media professionals. This fellowship aims to cultivate those working in public radio by providing mentorship, collaboration opportunities, and strategic career development.

The New Voices Public Radio Fellowship will select up to sixteen individuals with experience as reporters, hosts, producers, and editors in public media newsrooms or the podcasting space. Participants will join a dedicated cohort, fostering deep collaboration and enabling the development of lasting professional relationships within the public media industry.

Public radio needs bold, creative voices who understand the power of independent storytelling,” said Keisha Salmon, Executive Director of AIR. “This fellowship is about investing in those voices, giving mid-career professionals the space, support, and connections they need to shape the future of the industry.

Throughout the eight-week fellowship, participants will benefit from personalized mentorship and guidance from seasoned public radio professionals. Weekly webinars and discussions will feature special guests from leading public radio stations, offering diverse perspectives and insights into the evolving public radio ecosystem. While open to anyone in public media, sessions will be specifically tailored to the roles of reporters, hosts, producers, and editors.

A cornerstone of the 2025 New Voices cohort experience is the capstone project: a well-formed story pitch. Fellows will have the unique opportunity to workshop and refine their story ideas and pitches with their peers and mentors. The program culminates in a live pitch session to a panel of influential decision-makers from NPR and member stations, providing an invaluable opportunity for direct feedback and potential project development.

“We recognize the unique challenges and opportunities within the public radio landscape, and by bringing together a cohort specifically focused on this ecosystem, we can foster a network that will not only advance individual careers but also strengthen the entire industry for years to come." explains AIR New Voices Program Manager, Lynn Casper.

Applications for the AIR New Voices Public Radio Fellowship open on Wednesday, June 18th, 2025. The application deadline is 11:59pm ET Sunday, July 6th, 2025.
