Stephanie Guyer-Stevens

I first picked up a mic in 2003 in order to document women leaders in remote parts of the world organizing on behalf of their own communities, looking to them for examples of leadership. In the process, I travelled in and out of southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and the Himalayas. That series and the non-profit media team formed to create it are called Outer Voices. (LiveHopeLove, a documentary about HIV/AIDS in Jamaica and comprised entirely of film sound, was commissioned by Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, and received a Gracie. Center for Investigative Reporting gave us the Dick Goldensohn Award for reporting on Burma's 2010 elections.) Outer Voices docs have been broadcast on over 600 station in the US and internationally. Now, fifteen years since I began, I'm still creating radio, still giving the mic to people who lead by example, out of the usual western media spotlight. I still am in love with falling off the edge of the map and doing whatever I can to help bridge the gap for Americans, between us and the rest of the world to bring it all a little closer, more familiar. In collaboration with Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and several high schools I created a student run podcast on current affairs. I've also produced for NPR's Weekend Edition and Latino USA, PRI's The World, Radio Australia's Earshot, KCRW's UnFictional, Studio 360, Hearing Voices, World Vision Report, and Radio Netherlands South Asia Wired. In partnership with the good people of Hindenburg I teach audio storytelling to groups outside the U.S.
