About Liz
Liz Mak is an independent story editor and producer from Los Angeles, CA. For four years, she previously produced radio stories at the public radio show and podcast Snap Judgment. Before that, Liz reported for NPR member station KALW in San Francisco. She's also taught at the Transom Story Workshop.
Liz’s stories focus on voices from traditionally marginalized groups. Her pieces have taken her to search for hidden graves on a remote Indonesian island, document the 2016 protests at Standing Rock, and spend a year reporting from within San Francisco's Mission High. Her writing, photography, audio and video work have appeared in various outlets, including NPR, Studio 360, PRI’s The World, and The New York Times. You can hear her thoughts on reporting emotional stories on HowSound.
Liz's Portfolio
Kassem Eid had spent two years living in a city under siege. After he and his neighbors took part in the protests during the Arab Spring in 2011, Syrian President Bashar Al Assad began to punish towns like Kassem’s. His forces bombed them, surrounded them, and starved them. That’s when Kassem decided to fight back.
What happens when history calls on you to step up? We go to Standing Rock and the Dakota Access Pipeline protests to find out.
Citizen is an app that encourages people to live-stream incidents occurring in their neighborhoods. Trained technicians hired by Citizen listen for official emergency dispatches, then send alerts to users through the app. Some power users even listen to police scanners themselves, hurrying to the scene to film whatever’s happening. While some of the events are relatively benign -- for example, gas leaks -- others might be dangerous or violent, such as fires, hit-and-runs and knife fights. And the most avid Citizen users are there, right in the middle of the action, life-streaming the events. Get Wired went behind the scenes with one of these avid Citizen users: a 12 year-old named Anthony Goblirsch.
In the 1970s, thousands of Vietnamese refugees were left on the remote Anambas Islands in Indonesia. They were stranded without food, water, and shelter, forced to survive off the land. Now, almost 40 years later, one woman wants to go back to those distant islands, one last time.
Catie and Kimberly were adopted from China by a couple from Maine, who attempt to pass on a culture they've never known firsthand.
