About Julie
Julie Censullo is an award-winning freelance audio producer, editor, and storyteller based in Minneapolis, MN (USA). She is a 2023 Finalist for Best New Artist at the Third Coast International Audio Festival.
The majority of Julie's career has been focused on creating and managing community-oriented media. She edits the Minnesota arts, history, and culture program MinneCulture for KFAI (which won Best Podcast at the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalism Awards in 2023) and produces the Moth StorySLAM for the Twin Cities. She also produces a number of two-way interview shows, such as the U2FP CureCast and Doctor+, and is the co-creator of Out Cold, a spooky fiction anthology series, written/produced/directed by herself and Sophie Nikitas. Prior to going freelance, Julie worked as a production manager and producer for Twin Cities PBS and helped start WFNU 94.1 FM Frogtown Community Radio.
In spring 2023, Julie completed the In the Dark 16-week Audio Feature workshop, focusing on recording, story crafting, experimental narrative forms, sound design, and mixing. Her final project for class, Life Begins in the Stillness, was featured on an episode of Short Cuts on BBC Radio 4.
Julie is an improvisor and regularly performs at HUGE Theater in Minneapolis. She also is an improv tech and provides improvised lights and sounds (and occasionally live improvised foley!) at HUGE.
She is open to work producing (interview or narrative shows), field producing, tape syncs, script editing, audio editing, and sound design work.

We often associate movement with life. We say something is alive when we see it wiggle or twitch or run. But what about a body that can't move? To answer this question, artist Gabriel Rodreick visits a place that is known for its tranquility, as well as its liveliness: a bog. This piece from audio producer Julie Censullo explores the mystery, murkiness, and movement that exists in stillness.
This piece is also an abstract exploration of spinal cord injury and paralysis.
Originally aired on Short Cuts on BBC Radio 4. NOTE: story begins at 6:11
Lucha libre is a style of Mexican wrestling that blends acrobatics, combat, and classic narrative tropes of good and evil to engage audiences. One local company, Rudos Promotions, brings lucha libre matches to northeast Minneapolis once a month and provides training to new wrestlers during the week. Owner Jesus De La Torre hopes to inspire the next generation of luchadores in Minnesota. Reporter Julie Censullo spoke with De La Torre and some of his wrestlers in this story.
Mother Alfred Moes was an immigrant from Luxembourg, a woman religious, and the founder of two Franciscan congregations. She was also the first person to advocate for the hospital in Rochester that would become Mayo Clinic. While her visionary leadership proved essential to the founding of St. Mary's Hospital, her strong influence often put her in conflict with church leadership. Produced by Julie Censullo for the MinneCulture podcast.
An audio documentary about family, grief, and....audio documentation. Julie's dad Paul rarely talks about his older brother David, despite the fact that Paul loves to share family stories. But when her dad started digitizing old tapes from his childhood, Julie decided to ask about David for the first time.
"Old Tapes" was a finalist for Best New Artist at the 2023 Third Coast International Audio Festival.
A comedy storytelling podcast for dark times (both figuratively and literally) (because podcasting is not a visual medium!) (....get it?). Produced and hosted by Julie Censullo during lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
