About Anthony
Before journalism I studied philosophy and played drums in a synth-rock band. Curiosity, creativity, and a love for sound are at the heart of everything I do. I'm open to any and all storytelling mediums but I am especially passionate about documentary podcasts with personal narratives, surprising expert insights, and sound design. My interests are all over the place, but I've spent the most time reporting on health and chronic illness, indigenous communities across America, migration in Latin America and the U.S., art and food, and environmental issues in the Southwest.
I have created two documentary podcast series for our local NPR affiliate, written magazine-style and news features, produced many classic 4.5-minute NPR-style radio features, and done extensive reporting for an Audible true crime series that was based in Phoenix.
I've explored and done stories across Latin America—Mexico, Peru, Argentina and Panama. But I am a lifelong Arizonan with a strong knowledge of our local environment, history, culture, politics, and indigenous communities.
My written and audio work has been recognized with an Edward R. Murrow Award - Best Student Podcast, Education Writers Association Award - Best Feature Story, National Native Media Award - Best Coverage of Native America, SPJ Regional Mark of Excellence, Best Nonfiction Magazine Article.
Anthony's Portfolio
This is an informative audio-drama piece that combines voice-acting, expert interviews, and immersive sound design. I made this podcast as a Solar Tomorrows Fellow at Arizona State University. It is built around a science fiction story created by an interdisciplinary team of scientists and artists. The story, “The Scent of the Freetails,” was written by Deji Bryce Olukotun and performed here by voice actor Anthony Aroya. It is accompanied by sound design and music, as well as interviews with Lauren Withycombe Keeler and Chris Gearhart, experts on sustainable futures and solar technologies who helped create the world of the story.
I produced each episode of the AHA's new video podcast series from writing, to recording, to final editing. This entailed translating very dense and extensive medical research into a digestible script, then coaching medical experts on how to deliver that script conversationally.
Since early 2022, I have produced the Regenerative Real Estate Podcast, a bi-weekly interview show that features leaders and innovators in the world of sustainability.
I produced a segment on BBC's People Fixing the World, from World Service. I reported on an innovative retirement community at Arizona State University that allows residents to mingle and learn alongside college students.
I reported, wrote, voiced, and scored this episode of The Pulso Podcast about a group of Latina artists in Phoenix who were inspired by and dedicated to Frida Kahlo. This story was five years in the works, weaving the dramatic history of the artist's life in with a contemporary story of tragedy and resilience in Phoenix.
I created this documentary podcast series about environmental issues in Arizona, produced with KJZZ, Phoenix's NPR affiliate. I made this podcast from start to finish—doing all research, reporting, writing, scoring, and mixing.
I worked for over a year on this Audible documentary series about Ed Buck, an influential figure in the Democratic party who for years abused black men in his home with meth. I researched his early life in Phoenix and tracked down people that were close with him in the 1980s who had never spoken with the media before. I also found decades-old archival material for the podcast only available in a private collection.
I reported and produced this episode of the Making Contact podcast, which is syndicated on public radio stations across the U.S. It focuses on how ancient myths about Aztec human sacrifice manifest in modern-day stereotypes and profiles people in Mexico fighting racism in the country today.
