WDET Seeking Feature Pitches for Podcast on Surveillance

WDET is accepting pitches for feature stories to be part of an upcoming podcast on surveillance technology, data collection and how it is changing our society and the world we live in. 

Production is underway, and the podcast will begin publishing later this fall. 

We are seeking original reporting that uses compelling audio storytelling to illustrate real-life cases of how surveillance impacts the following topics: 

  • Nature, Environment, Climate Change
  • Medical Records, COVID-19
  • Other surveillance related pitches also accepted

Description: Freelance reporter will produce an audio feature to appear as part of a podcast by WDET. The feature will be used as part of a podcast episode where hosts and guests will discuss the story in addition to broader topics. Scripts will be edited by WDET. In addition to original reporting and editing, including field reporting and interviews, the reporter is responsible for mixing their own piece.

Compensation: $1,236 for feature reporting between 6:30-12:00 minutes in length. Consistent with NPR contributing reporter pay guidelines for Level 1 feature reporting. 

Timeline: 1 month turnaround from time of assignment to completed mix.
