Tom Cole

I have just retired after 33 years as an editor and producer at NPR. I like talking directly with reporters over the phone about ideas and approach. I am careful and thorough.

About Tom

I have been in public radio for nearly 50 years.  I started as an overnight board op at WAMU-FM, eventually becoming production manager, so my initial background was in audio engineering.  I took a couple of courses in 8- and 16-track studio recording.  My major in college (which I did not finish) was comparative literature.  I went from WAMU to VOA as an editor and producer for VOA Europe before joining NPR's Performance Today at its inception.  I then moved to NPR News as an editor and producer for Morning Edition's Arts Unit, which eventually became the Arts & Culture Desk, providing features for all of the news magazine programs.  I retired in January 2021 as a Senior Editor.  My greatest joy was collaborating with reporters - especially mentoring new reporters.  I also reported some features of my own.  I continue to host a weekly music program on Sunday mornings for WPFW-FM, the Pacifica station in Washington, D.C.
