About Sonia

I’m a journalist and audio producer. I report, write and make radio. My audio work has aired on numerous outlets, including 70 Million, NPR, PRI, Studio 360, Marketplace, KQED’s The California Report, Here & Now, and more. I also host and produce a podcast called Loitering, which is available to land in your email inbox as well as your favorite podcast catcher. More info on Loitering is available at :)

My work most often covers power structures, politics, inequality and identity, with an emphasis on revealing injustices and challenging assumptions. But I’m also attracted to avenues for stories that are offbeat and link local and global consequences, and am especially experienced in covering the South Asian diaspora. My family is from India and the Philippines.

I’m interested in collaborating on dynamic projects, whether they're narrative-focused series, newsier outputs, or something else entirely that's pushing the boundaries of this medium, and am actively looking to join a team. I have 13 years of experience reporting and producing audio and have worked as a full-time freelancer since 2013. I love audio because it forces us as listeners to create theaters in our own mind. Anything that enhances that aspect of the medium especially appeals to me, as well as projects where I could also imagine myself being the target audience.

I previously used to live and report in Japan and India and am currently based in Oakland, CA. More info about my background, experience, and stories I've produced and reported is available on my website. Thanks for reading and hope to hear from you!
