About Sonia
I teach audio storytelling part-time at Solano State Prison with KALW's Uncuffed, a training program and podcast based out of California prisons. I also freelance for podcasts and magazines and wear many hats: reporter, writer, producer, host, story editor, etc. I am always looking to collaborate on creative, dynamic and meaningful projects!
Most recently, I reported and hosted "Imitation Nation," an episode for 99% Invisible about the emergence and evolution of U.S. military simulations to train soldiers for warfare. Before that, I reported and hosted the BBC audio documentary "The hidden caste codes of Silicon Valley," inspired by a story I wrote for WIRED magazine. My audio work has aired on numerous other outlets, including 70 Million, NPR, PRI, Studio 360, Marketplace, KQED’s The California Report, Here & Now and more. Aside from WIRED, you can also read my writing in outlets like Harper’s, Mother Jones, The Atlantic and Politico Magazine.
I have over a decade of professional reporting and producing experience. I love audio for the intimacy and imagination it provokes among listeners, and for the texture it offers us as creators to synthesize sound and story. Anything that enhances those aspects of the medium especially appeals to me, as well as projects where I could imagine myself being the target audience.
I am based in Oakland, CA. Previously, I lived and reported in Japan and India. More info about my background, experience, and stories I've produced and reported is available on my website below.
If you're interested in very occasional updates, I host and produce a hybrid podcast and email newsletter called Loitering. loitering.substack.com :)
Thank you for reading and I hope to hear from you!
