About Rae
Rae Garringer (they/them) is a writer, oral historian, and audio producer who grew up on a sheep farm in southeastern West Virginia, and now lives a few counties away on S’atsoyaha (Yuchi) and Shawandasse Tula (Shawnee) lands with a large family of animals. Rae is the founder of Country Queers: a multimedia oral history project and podcast documenting rural and small town LGBTQIA2S+ experiences since 2013, and a proud member of the National Council of Elders Oral History Podcast team. Rae is currently working on two books: Country Queers: The Story of a Homegrown Oral History Project for Haymarket Books, and To Belong Here: A New Generation of Queer, Trans, and Two Spirit Writers on Race, Gender, and Home in Appalachia for the University Press of Kentucky. When not working with stories Rae spends a lot of time failing at keeping goats in fences, swimming in the river, and two stepping around their trailer. They are passionate about rural media made by and for rural people.

The Nerve! Conversations with Movement Elders is an oral history podcast from the National Council of Elders. This collaboratively produced podcast features interviews between younger organizers and movement organizing veterans who have helped bring to life every major social justice movement in U.S. history in the past 70 years.
