About Max
Hello, I'm max. Thanks for visiting my AIR profile.
I'm a sound designer, radio producer and podcaster born in Calgary, AB, Canada. My background in campus and community radio gives me a unique perspective on storytelling. Right now, I'm using that perspective to make compelling, high-production-value podcasts for brands, newsrooms, and creative firms. In the nine years I've been in the radio industry, the projects I've worked on have received nods from the Ambie awards, the Webby Awards, the Signal awards, the iHeart Radio Awards, and more.
I take a keen interest in recounting niche stories in digestable pieces. My reporting on alternative queer culture has won accolades on the national level, and my work has been written about in the New York Times, The New Yorker, Vulture, IndieWire, Psychology Today, SAD Magazine, The Vancouver Sun, and other local publications.
When I'm not too busy designing soundscapes or writing scripts, I'm teaching other people about how to make great audio. I've presented to students at the University of Victoria, I've guest-hosted a workshop with Bad Academy, and I've instructed a course for the NCRA Podcast School, among others.
I like to swim, and I'm learning how to skateboard. I just moved to Toronto, ON from Vancouver, BC, and I love my new city.
Max's Portfolio
Credits on this project include sound design, voice acting, and producer/talent management. "A sketch comedy podcast for kids 8 - 13 years old. Every week host Larry Dobbs combs the farthest reaches of the internet and plays auditory oddities, curios of sound, and blasts of the bizarre."
Credits on this project include post-production, and client management. "The rennie podcast -- everything real estate for the real estate interested. Tune in for regular discussions making sense of the latest market data and hear from an array of industry experts helping us answer big real estate questions about demographics, economics, urban planning, and home design. "
Credits on this project include research, script writing, interview teching, host coaching, post-production, and client management. "Have you ever wondered about the people, trends and forces shaping our future? From what we eat and what we wear to what we believe, our world is in a constant state of flux, which makes our current predictions about the future far from accurate. Co-hosted by Cat Wiles, Chief Strategy Officer at Cossette, Canada’s largest integrated creative agency, and Tracey Follows, Futurist, Speaker and Author of The Future of You, Think Beyond is a podcast that reframes the way we think about our current reality, so we can re-evaluate the way we envision our collective future—today, tomorrow and beyond."
Credits on this project include sound design, assistant editing, and file management. "Rainn Wilson stars in this fictional darkly comedic podcast that explores the on and off-air life of Terry Carnation – a late-night talk-radio show host who deals with bizarre topics, outrageous callers... and gets caught up in a mystery of his own."
Credits for this project include sound design, script writing, host coaching, and post-production. "Record Club is a live storytelling podcast that celebrates seminal albums and explores how these albums affect our lives. Hosted by musician Louise Burns, each episode features storytellers telling a true, personal story about how a particular record shaped them. This is not a show about dissecting the musicality of an iconic album, but a show that focuses on the relationship people have with music."
Credits on this production include audio editing/cleanup, and file management. "Relationship advice from completely unqualified Hollywood types."
Credits on this project include research assistance. "Aussie social media queen Celeste Barber and her BFF are back for another season of down-to-earth chats with some of the world’s most famous celebrities. Listen now for always hilarious, often relatable conversations."
Credits on this project include sound design, script writing, guest chasing & research. "Can three comedians create a legit sci-fi show? Comedians Ryan Beil, Maddy Kelly, and Mark Chavez are going to find out. Over eight episodes, they’ll try to write a serious, and seriously nerdy, pilot script. When they run into trouble they’ll consult Hollywood experts who have worked on things like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Firefly and science fiction superstars like Neil deGrasse Tyson, Rainn Wilson, and Neill Blomkamp. And in the final episode, professional actors will read their script, bringing it to life — for better or worse."
Credits on this project include guest chasing & research, script writing, interview teching, host coaching, and post-production. "Everybody’s got a brain, but very few of us know much about how it works. So to find out how brains do things like make memories, or what happens when they get sick, we’re on a quest to speak to scientists who work with brains for a living. We’re investigating healthy brains, dead brains, brains in jars… even the brains of TV-watching monkeys. For science! Join us on a journey down your auditory nerve to the body’s final frontier - the brain."
This project was entirely produced by max, including pre-production, production, post-production, and marketing/distribution. "Vancouver is home to an enormous, vibrant gay community and culture. Within that culture lives the Drag community: a group of performers that play with gender through costume, makeup, and song/dance (along with a devoted audience at every event). Recently, a hard hit to Vancouver drag came in the form of two venue closures. XY and 1181, two spaces that held drag shows almost every night of the week, were forced to shut down from lack of funds. The two clubs made up 25% of the venues in Davie Village – Vancouver's gay neighborhood – and they were the only two devoted mainly to the art of Drag. In this series, we explore Vancouver's drag scene, the timeline of XY and 1181's closing, the aftermath, and how the rest of Vancouver’s drag community is getting on in the wake of multiple venue closures."
Credits on this project include research, interviewing/reporting, & field recording. "There are over 10 million electric cars on the road globally after a decade of rapid growth, representing around 1% of the world’s car stock. But there are questions about whether there is the infrastructure to match. In many countries there are not enough chargers being installed to cope with the number of electric cars being sold. There are also doubts about whether existing electricity grids have the ability to store enough capacity to cope with charging demand and whether the amount of energy required can be fulfilled by green electricity alone."
