About Laura
Laura Herberg is a reporter and fill-in anchor at WDET, the NPR member station in Detroit. In 2017 and 2018, Laura was named the Michigan Associated Press Best Reporter for radio broadcasting. She has won several regional awards for her sound-rich features. Laura previously worked as the executive producer behind the StoryCorps Detroit podcast and as a producer for WDET's daily talk show, Detroit Today (previously the Craig Fahle Show). She also assisted with the Transom Traveling Storytelling Workshop when it came to Detroit in 2019.
Outside of WDET, Laura was the creator, host and producer behind Complete Me, a narrative, documentary style podcast about her difficulties completing certain tasks. It only lasted three episodes. In 2012, she was awarded a SoundCloud Fellowship for her project, Listen to Detroit.
Laura learned the craft of radio storytelling at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies, received her B. A. in Psychology at Lewis and Clark College and is currently working toward her Master of Urban Planning at Wayne State University.

Complete Me podcast
In each episode of this sound-rich, narrative podcast, Laura Herberg documents an attempt to check a task off of her to do list. In Episode 1, listeners ride along as Laura stakes out her former residence in search of the drums she left behind. In Episode 2, listeners get an intimate look at Laura’s strained yet loving relationship with her mother when she comes to visit Laura in Detroit. The Huffington Post writes, “On the surface, it may sound as exciting as reading the nutritional info off a carton of milk, but in practice, Herberg is engaging and interesting.”

Sundays at the Carpet House
Laura and photographer Amy Sacka spent an entire summer documenting a weekly gathering of Detroiters at an abandoned lot known as the Carpet House. The event is part music festival, part family reunion, part summer BBQ. The work was produced for WDET’s Framed By series. Laura created four audio pieces that were available for listening in a gallery setting alongside Amy’s photos. One of the pieces, an audio profile, won first place from the Michigan Associated Press, the Michigan Association of Broadcasters and the Society of Professional Journalists Detroit. The project was displayed at The Baltimore Gallery in Detroit, the Michigan House at SXSW in Austin, TX, and other locations.
