About Joanne
18 years at NPR covering health policy, medical research, public health, disasters, global health, food and drug safety, mental illness and more. Prior to that, I worked at several magazines, including Science News and U.S. News and World Report. I've taught global health reporting and medical reporting at the University level, and I've had fellowships from the Kaiser Family Foundation, the Carter Center, the Hibakusha International Cultural Foundation (for coverage of the long-term aftermath of the atomic bombs), and at the Harvard School of Public Health. I have an undergraduate degree in biology from Johns Hopkins University, and a graduate degree in journalism from Columbia University.
