Eli Chen is a digital news producer for WUNC / North Carolina Public Radio and is based in Chapel Hill, NC.
Previously, she was the senior editor of audio at National Geographic, working on the Overheard podcast. Eli was also worked as a science and environment reporter at NPR member stations St. Louis Public Radio and Delaware Public Media. She has worked as a producer and host of live storytelling shows for the science storytelling nonprofit and podcast The Story Collider and currently serves on its artistic advisory board. Eli has also received training from the Poynter Institute's Leadership Academy for Women in Media and has attended the Mississippi River programs with the Institute for Journalism and Natural Resources. Since 2017, she's been an active mentor with NPR Next Generation Radio program, which provides weeklong training sprints to aspiring radio journalists across the country.
She has a master's degree in journalism from the Craig Newmark School of Journalism and bachelor's degrees in creative writing and environmental sustainability at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. When not working, Eli likes making zines and drawing real life stories, rollerskating, cooking, and cuddling her anxious dog, Rosie. Her personality is best likened to Badtz Maru (yes, the Sanrio penguin): a little grumpy but also fun and mischievous.
