I am a national leader in the family music industry that specializes in Family Funk.
As a Teaching Artist, I conduct performances, workshops, and school residencies that take children on a magical journey through the Land of Percussion that allows them to hear, see and play different percussion instruments while gaining an understanding of the history of percussion and why it is one of the oldest forms of musical creativity.
My children's book, "The ABC's of Percussion with Music CD," was named a 2015 National Parenting Publication Awards Bronze winner, and my “Uncle Devin’s Drum Tales” CD won a 2013 Parents’ Choice Presentation Award. My 2018 release, “Be Yourself!” takes a different approach to children’s music, using funky drum and percussion grooves as the foundation to teach children about the importance of individuality. The CD empowers, uplifts, and inspires children to embrace and celebrate what makes them unique.
I am a Teaching Artist with both the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts and Young Audiences Arts for Learning - Maryland. I have also performed at many venues around the country including the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, the Freeman Stage at Bayside in Selbyville, DE; the Kids Really Rock Festival in Boston, MA, and the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling in Harlem, NY just to name a few.
I am also the co-creator of a 24/7 online music radio program for children called, Watoto Entertainment & Education or WEE Nation Radio, providing Global Beats for Little Feet! They stream R&B, Funk, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Go-Go, Reggae, Calypso, and world music all created for children and families. In April 2020, I debuted the companion WEE Nation Radio show on WPFW 89.3 weekly on Wednesdays 7pm-8pm. Uncle Devin is also a former host of his own Radio One Talk Show in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area, and a year later, my show was syndicated on KBOO 90.7 FM in Portland, OR.
I also have a 25-year career distinguished by commended performance and proven results as a Senior Equal Opportunity Professional and as a national and international leader in the family music industry. I designed successful training programs in Equal Opportunity and Diversity Training, Discrimination in the Workplace Training, and Alternative Dispute Resolution for over 15 Federal government agencies, including Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the National Park Service, U.S. Government Printing Office, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Department of Justice, along with conducting hundreds of investigations of workplace discrimination complaints for both the public and private sectors.
I have designed a professional development training entitled, “Racism in Children’s Music,” which has led me to become a proven resource for teachers and other children educators from around the world, including China, Australia, and the Netherlands, who have sought my advice on the musical content for their children and institutions.
