About Carly

I'm currently the metro reporter for New Orleans' NPR station, where I focus primarily on housing, transit, and disaster preparedness and recovery. If you've got a story or tip that falls under one of those umbrellas, give me a shout at my WWNO email: [email protected].

From April 2020 through December 2021, I was the Gulf Coast Correspondent for Southerly, where my work focused on disaster recovery across south Louisiana during two record-breaking hurricane seasons. Much of that reporting centered on the aftermath of Hurricanes Laura and Delta in Lake Charles, and was supported by a grant from the Pulitzer Center. 

As a freelancer, I've written about everything from refugee resettlement in Georgia for the Bitter Southerner, to the oil industry and incarceration in Louisiana for Scalawag, to a traveling rabbi serving the South's small-town synagogues for the Oxford American.

I grew up in Atlanta and earned a BA in English with a Creative Writing concentration from Bowdoin College in 2018.

How Louisiana Communities Are Navigating Hurricane Recovery During a Pandemic
Hurricane Laura was one of the strongest storms to hit Louisiana in over 150 years. It was also the first major hurricane to make landfall on U.S. shores during the COVID-19 pandemic. Only 15 years after the devastating blow of Hurricane Rita, these overlapping disasters have left residents of southwest Louisiana in the lurch, forced to navigate complicated bureaucracies and a lack of resources as they attempt to put the pieces back together.

What happens when polling places close because precincts are damaged from the storm? How does virtual school go on while there are widespread internet outages? When can families return safely to their homes? What happens when another storm hits, just weeks later?

I spent six months reporting this three part series for Southerly.
