Story of the Week: Exploring Faith in Kansas City

Screen Shot 2016-06-27 at 2.39.59 PMKansas City, Missouri, is a home to people with many different religious beliefs and practices.

Inspired in part by a shooting at a Jewish community center in Kansas City in 2014, KCPT and lead producer Steve Mencher started Beyond Belief with Finding America as a way to start conversations and tell stories of faith in Kansas City.

This Finding America Story of the Week is a 30-minute documentary highlighting three of the stories they’ve found. Two local high schools, one majority black and one majority Jewish, take a trip to the south to learn about Civil Rights; a Methodist church welcomes a growing group of African refugees; and a small Presbyterian congregation honors its community with bilingual worship.

With digital and broadcast storytelling and events designed with partners in the interfaith community, Beyond Belief, based at KCPT, explores the interplay of religious life—and lives in which religion is absent—with youth culture, race, civic engagement, and economic disparity. The project is led by Steve Mencher.
