Lads and ladies from London to Liverpool are listening to In Verse, which had its European debut last week on the BBC’s Americana. If you haven’t heard it yet, Americana is a radio program and podcast that bills itself as “an insider’s guide to the stories shaping the USA a thought provoking mix of discussion, reportage and eavesdropping on American airwaves.” The latest installment, introduced by the “presenter” as a dispatch from “Obamaland and Palin Country,” focused on the status of women in the U.S. It included a commentary about Sarah Palin. It also featured interviews with journalists Cokie Roberts and Christiane Amanpour, and Congresswomen Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN). And then, the highlight of the half-hour: “Just a Girl” by Susan Somers-Willett, part of Lu Olkowski’s series of docu-poems on the lives of the working poor.
