“There’s a lot of political talk about the mood on Main Street. But what are these streets named Main really like and how much do they have in common? To find out, a team of radio producers and artists launched the multimedia project Mapping Main Street last summer and began enlisting collaborators.”
One of those collaborators is Wisconsin photographer Amy Fichter who tells Budget Travel that she heard about Mapping Main Street on NPR and has been snapping shots and uploading them to the project’s flickr site ever since.
Last summer, the Mapping Main Street team packed up their gear in a beat up Subaru station wagon and made a cross-country trek to find the essence of Main Street, U.S.A. Perhaps this summer, you could follow their tracks and make a similar pilgrimage, a sort-of search for the soul of America.
So far 593 Main Streets have been documented on the Mapping Main Street site. That means there’s only 9,873 to go! Here’s hoping this Budget Travel recommendation will inspire tourists who happen upon Main Streets to share their stories and photos with Mapping Main Street.
