Bio: Betsy the executive director and general manager of The Daily Tar Heel, the independent, nonprofit news organization that serves the University of North Carolina and the Chapel Hill community. Until January 2017 she served as editorial adviser for AIR. She spends most of her time thinking about innovation, community journalism, and inclusivity in public and digital media, and figuring out business models.
Her 10-year career in community newspapers (and a four-year side trip into outdoors coverage at ESPN) led to a 2012 fellowship at Harvard’s Nieman Foundation for Journalism. As a fellow, she studied leadership and the collapse of the newspaper industry’s business model.
In 2013-’14, she earned an M.Phil in writing from Trinity College Dublin, where she examined digital disruption and innovation in book publishing and earned highest distinction for her thesis, a combination of poetry and creative nonfiction. She was AIR's editor and digital strategist from 2014-2016.
Betsy is an alumna of print newsrooms in Alabama, Idaho, Nebraska and North Carolina, a volunteer with The Op-Ed Project and the Women's Debate Institute, and the former author of AIR’s weekly round-up of innovation, the Public Media Scan. She lives in Durham, North Carolina.
