Scott Gurian is an award-winning radio and print journalist who's accomplished as an interviewer, reporter, editor, and producer. He's the host and producer of a new podcast called Far From Home (farfromhomepodcast.org), where he's documenting an 11,000 mile road trip he's taking from London to Mongolia. Between 2012 and 2015, Scott reported extensively on New Jersey's long-term recovery from Superstorm Sandy for both NJ Spotlight and WNYC/NJ Public Radio, earning a Peabody award along with his colleagues at WNYC for his investigation into the state's misallocation of storm resiliency money. Prior to that, Scott was a producer at The Takeaway, a national, daily radio news program co-produced by WNYC and Public Radio International, in collaboration with The New York Times and WGBH Boston. He also spent five years as News Director at public radio station KGOU in Norman, Oklahoma, where he covered everything from the Oklahoma City bombing anniversary and political wrangling at the state capitol to tornadoes and the annual prison rodeo. Scott's reporting has taken him around the world, including to Cuba, Mexico, Haiti, Cambodia, and the Bahamas. It's aired on NPR, the BBC, and dozens of public radio programs around the country. Scott studied radio documentary at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine and video documentary at Emerson College in Boston. He loves traveling and hopes to do more international reporting.
Scott has nearly two decades of experience producing features and documentaries, recording tape synchs, and covering everything from politics and breaking news to arts and culture. His work has earned him nearly 90 reporting awards including a Peabody, a national and two regional RTNDA Edward R. Murrow awards, several "Best Radio Reporting Portfolio" recognitions from the Oklahoma Associated Press Broadcasters and the Oklahoma chapter of the Society for Professional Journalists, and honors from the Association of Capitol Reporters and Editors, the North American Travel Journalism Association, the NJ chapter of the Society for Professional Journalists, Public Radio News Directors Inc., the Garden State Journalists Association, and the Deadline Club.
