In celebration of Black History Month, we’ve paid extra attention to opportunities that honor African American icons in public media and support emerging voices of color across the industry. ProPublica Diversity Scholarships to attend conferences
Details: $750 scholarships to support students who would otherwise be unable to attend 2019 conferences such as AAJA, NAHJ, NABJ, IRE, and many more.

Knight International Journalism Awards (Call for Nominations)
Details: The award honors reporters, editors, technologists, media managers, citizen journalists or bloggers who have pioneered coverage in their regions or countries.
Deadline: February 22, 2019

Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists
Details: Journalists who identify as women may apply for grants to support “educational opportunities, investigative reporting, and media development initiatives.”

Voices of Color Fellowship at Martha’s Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing
Details: Two full tuition fellowships ($1,600) and two runner-up fellowships ($500) for writers of color who want to attend a week of choice at Martha’s Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing.
Deadline: February 25, 2019

Ford Foundation Technology Fellowship
Details: Fellows will explore the intersection of technology and social justice. This full-time position comes with a salary and medical benefits, in addition to mentorship and training opportunities.

Ida B. Wells Fellowship
Details: A one-year fellowship geared toward supporting reporters with their “first substantial work of investigative reporting.” Fellows receive $16,000 each to cover travel and reporting costs, as well as attendance to the Investigative Reporters and Editors conference.

The Richard M. Clurman Award for Mentoring
Details: Outstanding mentors in public media will be honored at the annual Livingston Awards luncheon in June.

Vision Maker Media’s 2019 Public Media Project Fund
Details: Grants are available to support projects focused on the cultures, experiences, and values of American Indians and Alaska Natives.

KUOW Intro to Radio Journalism Workshop
Details: Asiring audio producers aged 15-18 are invited to apply to this program focused on introducing emerging voices to audio production and journalism. Each student received $1,200 at the end of the workshop.

Baltimore Community Fellowship
Details: $60,000 awarded for a term of 18 months to support local entrepreneurs of color focused on projects that address problems in underserved communities in Baltimore City.

Women of Color Caucus-Frontiers Student Essay Award
Details: Women of color who are currently graduate students with National Women’s Studies Association membership may submit an essay to the competition. One winner will receive $500 and publication of the essay in Frontiers.

The Octavia E. Butler Memorial Scholarship
Details: Thinking of taking a writing workshop at Clarion Writers Workshop? This scholarship, offered in honor of Octavia E. Butler, seeks to support writers of color who want to further finesse their writing skills.
