A New Indie
Simon Nissim Cohn-Gruenwald, the second son of producer, Robin White, was born on September 26th. Simon's mom Karen, is partnered with Teri, the mother of Robin's first son, Rafael. Robin, Karen and Teri share parenting responsibilities.
Geo Beach World Medal Winners
Tempest media and Geo Beach of Homer, Alaska have been awarded a World Medal in the New York Festivals' International Radio Awards - The World's Best Work. Beach gained top honors in the Craft & Technique division for Best Writing for a Series for his Top of the Planet and World of Mouth commentaries and essays.
The WorldMedal for Best Writing represents another major coup for Alaska independent producer Tempest media and Geo Beach. Beach recently became the first public radio commentator in the 65-year history of the Society of Professional Journalists awards to receive the Sigma Delta Chi Medal for Excellence; Beach won in the Radio division of Broadcast Editorials for his Personal Days series of commentaries.
Beach was the only independent journalist to receive an SDX medallion in a competition dominated by corporate media heavyweights.
Beach is at work on Light at the End of America, a book about Alaska.
Freudberg in Time Out
David Freudberg got a very friendly half page interview in New York's Time Out magazine (in their "time-in" radio section) about his Humankind' programs. The 14 week series is currently running on Newark & NYC jazz station WBGO on Thursdays from 6:30 -7PM.
1999 Salazaar Award
Jon Beaupre's recently won the 1999 Ruben Salazaar award for radio, for a piece he produced on Latinos in Film for the nationally syndicated program Latino USA. The award is named for the former LA Times correspondant and KMEX-TV News director who was killed during an anti Viet Nam rally in East LA in 1970.
