Bari Scott's Bio


[ Bari Scott ]Bari Scott began her long and illustrious career in radio nearly thirty years ago at KPOO in San Francisco as host and producer of Jazzmania, a weekly exploration of avant garde jazz. This native sister of Marshall, Texas quickly expanded into the national programming spotlight after moving over to Pacifica's flagship, KPFA, where she worked as a producer, host, editor, and Director of Third World Programming. From her post at KPFA, Scott was involved in the formative stages of acclaimed national programs such as The Grateful Dead New Years Eve National Broadcasts, and "World Cafe." In the mid-'80's, Scott began her move into a series of ground-breaking documentary series programs: Jimi Hendrix (1985), The Telecommunications Revolution (1989), and The Racism Project (1996). In 1995, Scott formed SoundVision Productions and currently serves as its Executive Director. As Executive Producer for The DNA Files, Scott is a recipient of journalism's highest honors, including a George Foster Peabody Award, the Alfred I. Dupont-Columbia University Award, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Award, the Association of Women in Communications, and this year, the Science Journalism Award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Scott is a recipient of a Knight Science Journalism Fellowship at MIT (2000-2001), and served as a Fellow in biomedical research at the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory. She was Co-Producer of Blacks and Jews, a video-documentary which premiered at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival and was later broadcast to viewers nationwide via PBS's POV.

Scott's newest programming initiative, Science and the Search for Meaning in the 21st Century, is a new series of radio documentaries about the intersection between science and the humanities. It is scheduled for broadcast in the fall 2004.
