The Numbers Talk

In this month’s spotlight, Catherine Stifter and jesikah maria ross share valuable lessons learned from planning a national documentary special. They've got the numbers to back it all up. Sue Schardt dishes out the MQ2 nomination numbers in the AIRmuse. There’s also an impressively long list of new AIR members to peruse — a nice boost in the wake of the Third Coast Festival. We’re up to 725 members strong.

From the Ground Up:
A New Paradigm for Independent Program Development and Distribution

By Catherine Stifter and jesikah maria ross

Our two-and-a-half-year multimedia project, Saving The Sierra: Voices of Conservation in Action, is almost over. The digital files are all tucked into a nice big hard drive, and we’ve recycled all but the most important papers. But before the project’s co-director and I head off to the spa to spend the $648 in PRX licensing fees, we’d like to share a few lessons learned along the way that any producer can use in planning a national documentary special.

MQ2: "Shaping the Sound of Tomorrow"
Deadline: Monday, December 1, 2008

We pulled back the veil, and we love what we found so far. Nearly 500 nominees and nominators make up the Tribe of MQ2 — those who tossed their collective hats into the ring to help advise and lead public radio through its digitally driven transition. The Talent Committee had the painful task of inviting just thirty of them to send proposals by December 1 for how they'll mingle traditional approaches to craft with the new. Up to 15 of these projects — spanning a broad spectrum of formats, styles, and geography — will be chosen for $20,000 to $40,000 in funding each. Grantees will be named early in March 2009, and our chosen makers will have until July 31, 2009, to show us their stuff.
