Smitten Mittens, Ladio, and Other Producer Groups

by Neenah Ellis

Safe in our electronic bunker/offices, we write, edit, mix, research, and interview, but all this independence and do-it-yourself can make a girl lonely. Producer Neenah Ellis examines some of the ways independents are breaking down the walls of our cozy virtual worlds.

Radio Ephemera
Deadline to apply: Saturday, August 3rd at midnight

The Third Coast Festival has launched its 2008 public audio challenge, and are we ever glad. This year, the call is for stories - 2:30 to 3:00 minutes long - that are inspired by two of five books chosen from the Prelinger Library and that include the voice of a stranger. Four of the submissions will be chosen for the TCF ShortDocs, and the winners will score a free trip to Chicago for the 2008 conference. Get more details here!

"Sounds Elemental: Water"
Monday-Friday, August 18-22
Application deadline: Wednesday, June 20th

AIR, with Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center in New York City, offers two weeklong intensives for mid- to advance-level producers with renowned sound artists/instructors Hans Tammen, Michael Schumacher, and Brenda Hutchinson (AIR). You do not have to be a member of AIR to apply. This opportunity may be especially appealing to those working in traditional radio formats and eager to experiment with unconventional approaches to sound and storytelling. Only 10 slots are available for this first summertime offering. Apply now.

Third Coast Festival / Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Competition
Early deadline for competition: Friday, June 27th

The TCF is seeking the most compelling and creative audio work produced worldwide over the past two years. In their eighth annual competition, they’re awarding prizes for Best Documentary, Best New Artist, Radio Impact and brand new category Best News Feature, to honor exceptional stories produced by newsrooms and independent reporters worldwide. Find out everything you need to know about entering the TCF/RHDF Competition.

My Source Testimonial Awards
Deadline: June 20th

My Source is a CPB initiative intended to strengthen community engagement of public radio and TV stations. DEI is running a contest seeking best local testimonials and encouraging stations to tap into its local pool of AIR talent. If you have a good relationship with a local station, make a pitch to help them win this contest. Details here.

Cool Tools: Express Scribe

This great timesaver, Express Scribe is a free software program that's both Mac and PC friendly. Express Scribe allows you - during playback - to start, stop, slow down, rewind five seconds, and any number of other options, all from within Microsoft Word. Two caveats: 1) you must play your audio files from your computer (sorry to all you MiniDisc lovers out there). And 2) some on the AIRdaily have noted kinks in loading audio files. Give it a test-whirl before fully embracing. - Erin Mishkin

Funding for AIR comes from our members and the generous support of NYSCA, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
