Embracing the Entrepreneurial Spirit

"Deconstruct the successful independent and you’ll discover an entrepreneur—an individual driven by a vision with the energy and stamina to see that vision made real. This month we feature two AIR member entrepreneurs: Steve Rowland and P.W. Fenton. Each in his own deeply personal way is successfully building an online enterprise, expanding the audience for creative audio."

AIR Member Spotlight:

Steve Rowland’s ArtistOwned.com

What if independent radio producers could quickly and easily sell their work directly to the public? Steve Rowland's newly-launched Steve RowlandsArtistOwned.com is now offering producers that very opportunity. ArtistOwned is an online audio distribution site similar to those of Audible.com, PRX and iTunes, but with its own innovative spin. Operating primarily as a music distribution site, its purpose is to promote independent work by connecting the artist directly to the listener. Anyone can download material from the site for a small fee. The artist receives 55% of the sale, all the while retaining ownership of the material. There's no risk and no cost.
Initially offering material exclusively from jazz musicians, ArtistOwned has now opened its doors to radio producers. Steve's own Peabody Award-winning series "The Miles Davis Radio Project" is now posted on ArtistOwned, soon to be accompanied by a wealth of work from other radio producers. For Steve, developing this body of material should just be a matter of time, as radio producers realize the untapped earning potential made possible by selling directly to listeners. You can contact Steve Rowland to inquire about posting work on ArtistOwned.

Words from AIR's new board members

An update from Robynn Takayama

"Who says that your vote doesn’t matter? I did the calculations and it looks like I squeezed my way onto the board by just one vote. Thank you. Along with joining the board, I’ve taken on a more personal challenge: two weeks ago, I left my day job and am now dividing my time between putting together my home office, pitching stories and developing creative projects. I seek inspiration in this month’s AIRblast on the entrepreneurial spirit!"

Entrepreneurial thoughts from Jim Russell

"The change from ‘radio,’ meaning ‘terrestrial broadcast,’ to ‘radio,’ meaning ‘any form of audio (even video) distribution', is taking place at a geometric pace. If you don't embrace it, it will simply run you over. AIR itself is grappling with what its new and improved ‘elevator speech’ should be. Who are we? Only the most important talent in the world: the inventors. If we can figure out how to say that effectively, it is about as powerful a message as we will ever deliver."

Tony Dec on AIR’s changing role

"AIR is positioned to celebrate in this broadening perspective and to lead the charge for more, better, and greater, (all while) connecting producers of all ages, backgrounds and disciplines with their audiences in ways that benefit both regardless of the platform. It’s an exciting time to communicate with sound; it’s an important moment to be a member of AIR, where stories worth hearing are worth supporting."
