AIR Member Spotlight on Joe Richman |
 |
There were presentations
at UNICEF and Open Society Institute,
the Lower East Side Girls Club and The Match
School, UCLA and Wesleyan, and even a CNN appearance
with Bill Clinton. That's a small taste of
what took place this spring during Joe Richman's month
long, five city tour with radio diarist Thembi Ngubane,
a 21 year old South African woman with |
|
| AIDS. In a Radio Diaries first, the tour was used to complement the broadcasting of Thembi's AIDS Diary,
powerfully expanding the story's reach and scope.
Next up
for Joe and Thmebi: a tour of South Africa in February.
"I didn't realize before that my story was so
touching and important. Coming to the US and meeting so many
people and having them hear my story... it made me feel like
a star. And now I know I have a lot of work to do back in
South Africa." - Thembi

The Code of Fair Practices
Saves the Day
Faced with a contract that asked her to cede significant
rights to her work, Rachel Goodman turned to AIR's Code of
Fair Practices for support. She used the Code to educate her
acquirer about the standard industry practice that defines
the producer as retainer and granter of all rights unless
otherwise agreed upon. This allowed her to assert that
her relationship had not been one of work for hire, but of a
rights holder interacting with a fiscal agent. Having the weight of the independent
community behind her, Rachel and her fiscal agent were able work
together to generate an agreement that was satisfying to
both parties - not a bad way for things to turn out. Check
out
AIR's Code of Fair Practices.
Interlochen Radio Residency a Success
AIR member Adam Allington finishes up
a two month Inerlochen Residency and earns praise from Interlochen
Radio News Director, Peter Payette:
"Adam did superb work for us these last two months producing
more than a half-dozen feature reports. A few of these have
been syndicated, one by NPR on Justice Talking. We thank Adam and wish him well.
And our
gratitude goes to the Association of Independents in Radio
for helping make the residency possible for the third year."
